Sporting CP have appointed former Portuguese international Joao Pereira to replace Ruben Amorim as the club's head coach.

Amorim officially undertook his final game as Sporting CP boss on Sunday as the Leoes came back from a 2-0 deficit to win 4-2, with the coach leaving on Monday to take over as Manchester United manager. Sporting CP have not taken too long to announce their candidate to take over the reins from the Old Trafford-bound boss in the form of former Portugal international Pereira.

Pereira ended his playing career at Sporting in 2021 and immediately became part of the Under 23s coaching team before having been handed control of Sporting B earlier this year. After just 11 games in charge of the junior team, Pereira has impressed the club hierarchy enough to be handed the reins of the senior squad, who currently have a 100 per cent winning record from 11 Primeira Liga clashes.

Pereira was also the standing coach of Sporting's U19 team which competed in the UEFA Youth League this season, he led the side to three wins and one draw including a 2-1 win over Manchester City U19s last week.
WHAT NEXT FOR SPORTING?
Pereira will have some good time to get into the team's structure and understand the dynamic of the squad thanks to the international break. Sporting will undertake their first match under the 40-year-old's guidance when they take on Amarante in the Taca de Portugal on November 23.
